Our ‘Live to Love’ volunteers organized a group blood donation at Red Cross On December 20 as our gift of love in the festive season which also wrapped up our monthly community service in 2009.
As we have witnessed, the number of natural and man made disasters around the world is on the rise, blood demand to help save lifes is vital. Quoting a few interesting facts in Red Cross’ USA website, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood; more than 38,000 donations are needed every day; one out of ten people admitted in a hospital needs blood and the total blood transfusions in a given year is 14 million (2001 data)…

Following the life release conducted by six Hong Kong sanghas in Chengdu on October 17 (the event has been covered in this website before), the Live to Love journey didn’t stop there. The Hong Kong sanghas, led by H.E. Rigden Rinpoche, traveled way beyond the hard-hit areas of Wenchuan, devastated by the massive earthquake in May 2008, to visit a primary school of the ethnic minority in a remote region. The school was re-built after the earthquake. Continue reading ‘Extending Loving-kindness Across the Border in Chengdu’
November 7: Free Health Screening for Special Athletes
‘Live to Love’ volunteers provided on-site health screening assistance to the athletes of the Special Olympics Hong Kong who have always achieved outstanding results for Hong Kong. Areas of assistance included oro-motor, hearing, visual screenings and health education. Through this series of health screening and a variety of specially designed games, the special athletes also managed to receive some important messages on keeping healthy.
Mentally challenged individuals are in need of both social and family care with great patience and understanding. We were deeply moved by the unconditional love from their parents and families. With their hearty laughter and the contented looks on the parents and volunteers, it showed that all parties enjoyed the whole day program.

Mother Teresa is no stranger to at least half of the world’s population. ‘Home of Love’ is one of the non-profit charitable organizations first founded in Calcutta by this great saint to provide services, love and care to those dying beggars, to give them love and dignity and shelter as their last home.
‘Home of Love’, under the order of Mother Teresa, was established in Hong Kong in 1983 and is currently run by a few volunteering Sisters. They provide short-term accommodation and food to the needy who are referred by Hong Kong Government’s Social Welfare Department.
October 3 was Mid-Autumn Festival in the Chinese calendar year. Traditionally, it is a day of family reunion of loved ones and celebrated with specially made Moon Cakes after a sumptuous dinner. Sixteen Live to Love volunteers visited the ‘Home of Love’ on this particular day to help distribute food to those homeless who frequent the facility. They also brought Moon Cakes to distribute, and shared their love and care with the homeless, reminding them that there are people who care. The volunteers also took time to help clean fans and window at the residence. It was a busy and tiring day but very fulfilling for all who accomplished what they set out to do. Sunday, September 20 was one of those hot summer days here in Hong Kong. For the second time since our last visit on June 28, the team of ‘Live to Love’ volunteers paid a second visit to the Society for Abandoned Animals (SAA) – a place filled with love and compassion for the abandoned animals! Gone are the days of being homeless for these poor and lovely animals. Staying at SAA may not be as warm and cozy like those who are with loving and doting owners, however, SAA’s staff and visiting volunteers are trying their best to provide them with the necessary shelter and utmost care and attention. As the Swine Flu is still wide spread amongst the world communities, the Hong Kong SAR Government kicked off a ‘Clean Hong Kong Campaign’ to promote personal and public hygiene to combat H1N1 influenza. As dutiful citizens, and great supporters of the environmental protection theme of ‘Live to Love’, Hong Kong sanghas organized a ‘clean the beach’ activity on July 26.
Bracing the heavy rains on that hot summer day (which miraculously lifted off when the volunteers did their bid), Hong Kong sangha collected wastes and plastics off a public beach on the Hong Kong Island. It was amazing how much rubbish was left behind, e.g. plastic bags and bottles, polyfoam food containers and even fishnets…
